The National Consumer Law Center

The National Consumer Law Center (NCLC ), headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts, is dedicated to addressing some of the most critical issues facing consumers around the United States. They do this in a number of ways.

First, NCLC co-counsels with attorneys around the country to provide input and advice on how to more effectively pursue consumer claims. Most often, this involves bringing a class action to address wide spread problems that affect hundreds, thousands, or tens of thousands of consumers. For example, NCLC is currently involved in a class action against Ameriquest. The various allegations differ, but the main idea is that Ameriquest used high pressure tactics to put people into crippling home loans which often caused them to lose their house. These loans were made despite the fact that Ameriquest promised multiple times to change its ways.

A second way NCLC attempts to help consumers keep and enforce their rights is through the ongoing training of consumer attorneys. NCLC hosts a conference each year in which presenters from around the country teach attorneys about the Fair Credit Reporting Act , the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, auto-fraud, illegal lending practices and a host of other topics which affect almost all consumers.

The final major way that NCLC helps consumers is by making available information for lawyers and consumers. NCLC has drafted the most complete set of books on consumer law to date. Each book addresses an important topic, and the variety is incredible. Books address such as student loan law, consumer arbitration agreements and automobile fraud. The books are a constant resource for consumer attorneys. They include citations to cases from all over the country, helpful tips in litigating issues and CD s which have sample complaints, discovery and motions. Individual books or the entire set are available. In addition, the NCLC provides a number of consumer publications that covers topics ranging from surviving debt to how to stop predatory lending. You can visit consumerlaw.org to order these books.
