One woman was killed and three others injured when the left rear tire-Dunlop 265R model- of a 1995 Toyota Land Cruiser SUV suffered complete tread separation while on the highway. The separation caused the SUV to leave the highway, flip over, and roll four times. One passenger, the driver's mother, was pronounced dead at the scene, while the others suffered serious injuries. At trial, the plaintiffs argued that the Dunlop tire suffered from manufacturing defects due to air, moisture, and other contaminants that were present during the manufacturing process, causing adhesion and/or cohesion failure. The jury found Dunlop liable, and rejected the defendant's claims that the driver and one unbelted passenger contributed negligence. The jury awarded a total of $4.34 million in damages.
