Bank Avenue Landfill, now a public park, in St. Bernard, Ohio

The Ohio Department of Health, under a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, recently conducted a study on the site in St. Bernard Ohio, and issued a report concluding that explosive levels of methane exist at the landfill boundaries. The report also concludes that, while landfill gases have been found in and under Bank Avenue homes, they are not expected to harm people's health AT THIS TIME, because current methane gas and VOC levels are below levels of health concern. The former landfill is currently a grassed over park, with new homes within 200 feet, and 234 homes within 1000 feet.

Environmental attorneys working with The Simon Firm have reviewed the Bank Avenue Landfill Site Health Consultation. What the ATSDR report and its associated data sets do not reveal, is any testing conducted for hydrogen sulfide. Even though the landfill gases may not be at concentrations high enough to cause permanent injury, they still may contain a hydrogen sulfide concentration high enough to cause annoying rotten egg like odors in the basements and symptoms such as itchy and burning eyes, sore throats and coughing.

The Olean Times Herald had reported in July that residents claim that the city had been reporting methane gas levels to the EPA since at least 2000, but did not inform residents
