Avandia® use linked to heart attacks and deaths.

Aboutlawsuits.com reports increasing likelihood that an FDA advisory panel will recommend that an Avandia recall be issued next month, as two new studies (see here and here to read further evidence that GlaxoSmithKline’s diabetes drug increases the risk of heart attack and life-threatening injuries.

The article continues that an independent panel of expert advisers to the FDA is scheduled to meet on July 13 and 14 to make recommendations about what steps the regulatory agency should take to protect consumers. While the FDA is not required to follow the advisory committee’s advice, the release of the two studies on Monday, and the advisory panel’s anticipated decision, is expected to bring considerable pressure on FDA to recall Avandia from the market.

Aboutlawsuits.com also reports that Dr. Rosemary Johann-Ling, a former drug safety manager at FDA, has given a deposition as part of the ongoing Avandia litigation, during which she testifies that Glaxo failed to turn over key research that showed Avandia heart risks in 2001. Johann-Ling also testified that the FDA gave the company improper access to its internal decision-making process regarding the drug’s safety. Sources familiar with the deposition gave details to Bloomberg News.

The article continues that her testimony will likely be used as evidence in the first Avandia trials scheduled to begin in the federal multidistrict litigation (MDL). Johann-Ling’s deposition appears to confirm some of the findings in a recent U.S. Senate report, which determined GlaxoSmithKline knew that Avandia caused heart problems, but failed to inform the U.S. drug regulators. The Senate report also revealed that some FDA drug safety reviewers have been calling for a recall for Avandia since 2007.
