Mesh used in Pelvic Surgeries Under Scrutiny - Chicago Tribune Report

Background

On October 20, 2008, the Food and Drug Administration issued a Public Health Notification to healthcare providers reporting that in the previous three years, the FDA had received over 1,000 complaints of complications from the use of mesh, including erosion of the mesh through the vaginal wall, infection, pain, recurrence of the prolapsed and/or incontinence and perforation of the bladder and bowel by the mesh.

In February, 2009, the FDA again expressed concern related to the safety and lack of adequate warnings related to these products.

Vaginal Mesh

Johnson & Johnson, through its subsidiary Ethicon, manufactures and sells the Gynecare Prolift Anterior Pelvic Floor Repair System, made from a synthetic polypropylene mesh, which is placed inside the pelvis to restore organ support.  C.R. Bard manufactures and sells a similar product, the Avaulta Plus BioSynthetic Support System.  Generally, these products are known as vaginal mesh.

Slings

Johnson & Johnson and Ethicon also manufacture and sell the Gynecare TVT Secur, which also contains polypropylene mesh meant to treat stress urinary incontinence with placement of sub-urethral mesh to support the urethra without tension.  Bard manufactures and sells a similar product, the Align TO Trans-Obturator Urethral Support System.  Generally, these products are known as slings or bladder slings.

Complications

All of these products use plastic mesh intended to shore up the prolapsed (fallen) organs, which can cause incontinence and other problems.  In some women, however, the plastic mesh cuts through the vaginal wall, becoming exposed, increasing the risk of infection and causing pain.  Moreover, the plastic mesh can also cut into nearby structures and tissues, causing holes in your bladder, bowel and/or uterus.  Severe pain is often associated with these events.
