Background
On October 20, 2008, the Food and Drug Administration issued a Public Health Notification to healthcare providers reporting that in the previous three years, the FDA had received over 1,000 complaints of complications from the use of mesh, including erosion of the mesh through the vaginal wall, infection, pain, recurrence of the prolapsed and/or incontinence and perforation of the bladder and bowel by the mesh.

Complications
All of these products use plastic mesh intended to shore up the prolapsed (fallen) organs, which can cause incontinence and other problems. In some women, however, the plastic mesh cuts through the vaginal wall, becoming exposed, increasing the risk of infection and causing pain. Moreover, the plastic mesh can also cut into nearby structures and tissues, causing holes in your bladder, bowel and/or uterus. Severe pain is often associated with these events.
