Middle Tennessee Public Radio is reporting that residents and environmental activists around Murfreesboro, Tennessee are becoming increasingly concerned about landfill issues. They are voicing their concerns regarding the Middle Point Landfill and the surrounding air quality. The issue was addressed recently at a public meeting with the waste management company and the Department of Air Pollution Control. One thing residents and activists would like to see more of is independent air quality testing, as right now the waste management company, BFI/Allied Waste Systems, does all of its own testing. State officials say they are confident that BFI is meeting EPA standards for its testing, but residents are unhappy and have formed an organizing group called SOCM that is considering petitioning the EPA to review BFI's permitting.
