We recently blogged about residents living near the Faircloth landfill in Hinds County, Mississippi, and their concerns about odors. On December 15, 2009, over 100 residents attended a public meeting to voice their disgust for the Faircloth Rubbish Landfill, according to the Clarion Ledger.

One of the speakers, Kenneth Ruckstuhl of Hinds Citizens Against Rezoning, points to improper dumping being the cause of the odor. In August, the landfill owner paid the state of Mississippi $15,000 in fines for disposal of unauthorized waste and unconfined workspace that was found in 2008 inspections. In 2003, it was fined $7,000 when inspectors discovered paint cans and plastic bottles on the site. Even if they really are only taking construction and demolition waste, if the landfill is improperly maintained, the particles in the waste can break down to form hydrogen sulfide, which has that horrible smell of rotten eggs.
