The Iowa City Press-Citizen is reporting that the superintendent of the Iowa City Landfill has announced that upcoming expansion will increase odors as garbage that has been covered for more than a decade is unearthed during the new construction. While the superintendent goes on to say that they will be adding extra gas collection wells that will eventually lessen the smell, landfills can expand and grow without allowing odors to escape the landfill’s boundaries if the landfill uses proper engineering controls and techniques.
