WWMT.com is reporting that in Comstock Township, MI, residents and town officials have been meeting to ask the state to stop an energy company from putting sediment from the Kalamazoo River near some of its most important businesses. Residents, town officials, and business owners fear the odor from the sediment would negatively impact the businesses. The company, Enbridge Energy, is planning to take sediment from the river and treat it on land next to the businesses before sending it on to a landfill. The owner of a local brewing company stated that his environmental consultant has reported that the treatment process will emit foul odors. He believes it could put him out of business. The energy company's work is on hold after the township found out about it though, since the company never filed a site plan with them. The Township Supervisor has now asked the DEQ to reject use of the site.
