A California man was cleaning the inside of a concrete mixer when it suddenly turned on. The mixing blades cut through both his legs. They could not be saved and had to be amputated above the knee. He sued the manufacturer of the machine because it did not have adequate safety features. The machine should have had a delay between when it was turned on and when the blades started moving, warning horns and beacons, and an interlock system. The parties settled for $3.5 million plus lifetime medical benefits.
