is reporting that Republic Services, the owner of the Southern Illinois Regional Landfill located north of DeSoto, Illinois, is testing the ground around the landfill after a tanker truck carrying 4,400 gallons of a solvent used to clean pesticide containers dumped at the landfill, causing a stench that could be smelled at least 15 miles away. Some residents living nearby were reporting burning eyes and throats, and difficult breathing, and had to be evacuated.
