Coleman Alexander started smoking Kent cigarettes as a young teenager. Decades later, he eventually contracted small-cell carcinoma of the lungs as a result of his addiction to the cigarettes. Mr. Alexander's estate filed claims against the Lorillard Tobacco Company alleging, among other things, that Kent cigarettes were an inherently dangerous and defective product due to their risks to health and addictive properties. The jury awarded Mr. Alexander's estate $20 Million in compensatory damages, plus $25 Million in punitive damages.
