In 2002, the owners of a 165-acre mobile home park in Campbell County, Virginia discovered that the drinking water was contaminated with volatile organic compounds from the Campbell County landfill. For the next three years, discussions between the county and the owners, Claude and Virginia Royal, did nothing to solve the well water contamination. And so, in 2005 and 2006, the Royals sued the county claiming it operated the landfill in a manner that caused a plum of toxic chemicals to pollute their water and land.
The News & Advance reports that in 2007, the county filed a third-part lawsuit against the consulting company hired to monitor the landfill, Richmond-based Joyce Engineering, Inc. After a series of delays, the 15-day trial is tentatively scheduled for December. We will be keeping an eye on this story for developments. It is not very often that an engineering firm is brought into a lawsuit as a third party.
