The IEPA is urging residents who have private wells in Fox Lake, Illinois, a Chicago suburb, to get their wells tested for dry cleaning chemicals. Two municipal backup wells have tested positive, though they did not exceed federal safe drinking water standards. The IEPA and IDPH are still concerned because the chemicals could break down into vinyl chloride, which is toxic at low levels, and is a known carcinogen in humans.
