EPA coordinating soil sampling at Superfund site in Lakeland, Florida

The EPA issued a press release that they will begin taking soil samples from land around the Landia Chemical Company site in Lakeland Florida, which is a Superfund site. The Superfund area encompasses 13 acres that include the former Landia Chemical Company and Florida Favorite Fertilizer. The sampling and possible subsequent clean up is pursuant to a 2009 settlement between the EPA and Landia Chemical Company, Agrico Chemical Company, BASF Sparks LLC, PCS Joint Venture, Ltd., Sylvite Terminal & Distribution, LLC, Billy G. Mitchell and Walter G. Grahn.

From 1945 through 1987, pesticides bled into the ground and formed a plume that extends throughout the site and possibly into residential areas south of the property.
