EnCana blamed for failures in pipleline rupture near Pouce Coupe, British Columbia

On the morning of November 22, 2008 an EnCana Corp. pipeline ruptured, releasing a deadly gas of hydrogen sulfide, measuring 30,000 cubic meters, at 6,200 parts per million (ppm). The rupture happened near a residential area near Pounce Coupe, BC. According to the (U.S.) CDC the safe level for someone working around hydrogen sulfide is 20 ppm. Even brief exposure of high concentrations of hydrogen sulfide can cause loss of consciousness or death.

The Globe and Mail is reporting that the British Oil and Gas Commission investigated and has concluded that EnCana did not ever follow their own safety plan. It was almost 2 hours before the Provencial Emergency Program, who could have conducted an evacuation much sooner, saving residents from breathing in the fumes. Thankfully, many families had notified each other and got out before it got much worse.
