A local activist group in Northampton, North Street Association, posted in their blog the entire 2 hour meeting with the City Council on September 3, 2009, where city officials discuss what to do regarding the landfill and the mounting odor complaints from residents. The meeting was filmed by Water Not Waste another local activist group.
We previously posted the recent ATSDR Report (SP blog – ATSDR Report on Northhampton, Massachusetts landfill). According to the MPHD, between April 2008 and January 2009, 400 calls were made to the landfill's odor complaint response hotline. There were also concerns of possible cancer clusters reported in the news last year. You can read more about that in the Paradise City Forum. While officials can't point to proof of a specific cancer cluster, the hydrogen sulfide odors leading to a loss of enjoyment of one's own home are unmistakable.
We will keep an eye on this for developments. While we do not represent anyone at this site, we represent hundreds of similarly situated people around the country in various landfill and environmental litigation.
