MassDEP issued a press release on May 6 stating that between August and December of 2009, they confirmed landfill odors on 20 occasions at locations surrounding the Chicopee Landfill in Chicopee, Massachusetts. Further, MassDEP attributed the landfill odors to landfill operations at the location operated by CVSWD, a subsidiary of Waste Management, Inc. CVSWD will pay the $32,500 penalty, install additional backup landfill gas management capacity, improve the existing landfill gas collection system, and perform additional air monitoring at and around the landfill.
We will monitor this situation closely. We do not represent anyone at the Chicopee, Massachusetts site. However, we represent hundreds of similarly situated people in the United States in various landfill and environmental litigation, including over 100 residents affected by the Crow Lane Landfill in Newburyport Massachusetts.
